Explanation: While exploring type I found that type is much the same as people. Each letterform must be created just as each individual person. As I continued to explore, I also became aware of how we interact with letterforms through sight and sound. We must recognize the shape and understand the sound.
  • Working on learning more about how to manipulate expressions to obtain a more recognizable image
  • Determining how the word is best spelled out (ie. one letter at a time on the screen, each letter transitioning in while overlapping, etc)
  • Learned how to keyframe an expression and manipulate how that expression animates within After Effects (parenting, the use of sliders)

Jackson Spencer VIST 206 Review 2/22 "Ocean Man"

Jackson Spencer "Ocean Man" VIST 206 Review 2/22

LOGLINE: The ocean waves become one with a man.

Project Notes:

-2D onion skinning animation
         -TVPaint
-low contrast color (blues, B/W used for a few hightlights and shadow
-emphasis on flow and perspective

Calm, rolling waves bring a slowly rising tide to the shoreline, while a thunderstorm begins to brew far out in the middle of the ocean. The howling winds cause the ocean waves to undulate more and more intensely until a gigantic, crashing wave reaches its crest and starts to take the form of a man. As the waves rise, he bounds forwards, leaping and splashing and twisting fluidly. The force of the running man seems unstoppable, however as the speeding waves begin to approach the shore, they run into rocks and start to lose momentum, portrayed by the man becoming fatigued. Soon enough the crashing waves return to a calm tide as they lap at the shoreline once again.

Member Work:

Overview:

Maps (Concept):
Below shows a top-down view of the terrain, with light values representing higher areas and dark lower. The map is designed to direct focus to the end point while providing multiple free routes to approach the end. Landmarks ground and provide a sense of continuity and interest to the player.

Environment (Concept):
Experimenting with scale and color for the low poly plant environment inviting the viewer to explore.

Colors:
Official color palette.

Models
Models based on concept work and low-poly design.

Shaders:
Research was conducted on the various ways to make and apply shaders in unreal. A few test models are displayed below, some with translucent flat gradients and others with basic low poly shaders.

VR (Research and Testing)
I have tested different methods of exporting to Unreal as well as researched procedural genertion.

The soundtrack and sound effects should lend to the idea of a peaceful and serene environment without distracting or overwhelming the player.
